My story by Mark Grey

Mark's obsession with Holden cars started from an early age. Mark has fond memories of watching the family's caravan hooked to the back of his Dad's HG Holden as they headed away on holiday.
He remembers looking out the back window at the nose of the caravan just centimeters
away as they travelled along the coast.

60 Years Loyal

Those early years were a foundation for what is now a real passion and love for Holden. As a founding member of the Early Holden Club, Grey has owned eight Holdens over the years, with an award winning 1953 FX Holden Ute as part of his collection.

The FJ Arrives

The first FJ arrived in New Zealand in November 1954. The FJ was perhaps the most fondly regarded of all the early Holdens. The sight of its big, bold, familiar front grille has the power to transport baby boomers to a fabulous era where the fifties stood for rock and roll and not their age group. The first car that many ordinary Kiwis ever owned, the FJ got families out onto the open road in large numbers.

1950 FJ Holden

The FJ had a similar body to 48-215 but with open grille with thick horizontal chrome bar; Holden badge mounted on front centre of bonnet; centrally mounted rear stop light has chrome surround.

First New Zealand Assembled Holden

By the mid-1950s, Holden was well and truly established as a market leader but the FJ design was starting to look dated. Along came the FE which sported a larger, roomier body with a longer wheelbase and wider track. A lower roofline and flatter bonnet and boot complemented the new look and a range of new exterior colour schemes were introduced.

1957 FE Holden

The FE introduced a new body with hatched grille and hooded headlights; Holden badge mounted front centre of bonnet; model name on rear quarter panel; one piece windscreen; wraparound front and rear bumpers.
